New Flood Maps Drawn by FEMA
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announces redrawn
flood maps which identify areas around the Greater Binghamton that
are vulnerable to flooding and mudslide damage. The new maps
bring more than 6,500 properties into the high-risk flood zones,
requiring many building and dwelling owners to purchase flood
insurance for the first time.
The "Map Modernization" process is not complete yet, but the new
maps are available for viewing on the internet at http://gis1.msc.fema.gov/Website/newstore/viewer.htm
Until the new maps are formally approved, homeowners and businesses
affected by the changes can purchase flood insurance at current
rates and be grandfathered in to existing rates.
