Today marks the first day that ridesharing becomes available in New York State. Uber and Lyft are the Transportation Network Companies (TNC) that have been approved under NYS law as of 12:01 a.m. today to provide ridesharing utilizing their smartphone applications.
We’d like to inform our insureds that driving for a TNC affects your personal auto insurance coverage. Auto insurance policies do not provide coverage when the driver transports people and property for a fee. Those who drive for TNCs are doing so for income. Therefore, while you are engaged with Uber or Lyft, your personal auto insurance does not apply.
Specifically, your personal auto policy will not cover you for accidents involving bodily injury, property damage or damage to your vehicle:
• While you are logged into the TNC’s digital network; and/or
• While you are engaged in a pre-arranged trip
TNCs are required by the new NYS law to provide primary liability insurance coverage for their drivers. Uber and Lyft may also provide coverage for physical damage to your vehicle while engaged with them (but only if you carry comprehensive and collision coverage on your personal auto policy).
If you drive for Uber, Lyft, or any TNC, or if you are thinking about doing so, please contact our office so that we may review your options with you. We want to help you make an informed choice about your insurance coverage.
